Oak Glen apple festival

Lorelei and I went back up to visit this weekend. This time we came back with apple pie, apple crisp, apple cider and more. It's nice being up in the mountains this time of year. It really makes me miss the mountains back home when the leaves turn color.

We toured the old school house this time. Since Lorelei is a substitute teacher, her mother is a teacher, and my mom is a teacher, we figured why not. The school is over 120 years old so it had to be cool just for how old it is.

It stopped being used in 1960 but had been taught in from 1860-something (I believe) until then. It's amazing the rules for teachers back then. Everything was so strict. With all the rules for being a teacher and how time consuming being a housewife was back then, you weren't permitted to be both. So, being a teacher meant a life of solitude...quite literally.

It was a school built out of stone with gorgeous golden bird's eye maple floors. The floors obviously have been sanded down over the years and I was amazed that considering that and how old it was, the floors still barely creaked. An amazing testament to the quality of build construction back then.

Daily schedule

I'm learning about the first students. They were from 3 families and there were only 10 of them. One family had 6 of the children.
