Don wasn't able to go today so I was in a way, tested on my ability to stay disciplined with regard to pacing. I think I managed well. Typically I've still had difficulties settling down and riding a good pace from the park up to Green River and back down through the Keno's bridge. Today I believe I mastered it.
My goal wattage for the entire trip down to Huntington Beach was 250 - 280. I maintained that fairly well with some peaks due to underpass climbs and whatnot. On the way back from HB, I tried to average between 270 and 300. I think I accomplished that pretty well also. With about 4 miles to go I really picked up the pace and put in an all out power finish. This finish has been difficult for me in the past. Partly due to the fact that I go too hard too early and have nothing left at the end to finish strong with. Also, partly because the last 4 miles of trail is riddled with tree roots bumping up the concrete. My legs don't appreciate the bumps nor do any other areas I'm seated on. It's been something I've had to overcome since the pain of riding through the area demoralizes me but I'm finally overcoming not only the pain inflicted by the trail conditions but also the big lactic acid accumulation from such an effort.
