Recently, Alex, Mike and I decided to head out to Tucson again this November to race in the El Tour de Tucson. Alex and I thoroughly enjoyed the 80ish miles last year and upon returning, Mike was eagerly anticipating it too. So it's planned and we're going to start training.
We do have a limited amount of time to increase our riding distance before Nov. 22nd. I race one weekend a month and have another weekend dedicated to work on my climbing. That leaves 2 weekends a month to increase our distance from 40 to 80. ...roughly 7 weekends until Tucson. A lot of the work is going to have to take place on our own.
I rode 50 miles Tuesday after work. I left around 3:20 and met Mike halfway into the ride on my way back by the house. We rode out past my work to the far east end of Rancho Cucamonga before turning back. The ride back from RC to the house was nothing but stiff headwind all the way. It was brutal and I neglected to eat properly at work for a ride that was going to burn 2986 calories. Needless to say, while I didn't bonk, I certainly was worse for wear when I reached the house. I'm certain that I went into calorie debt and my muscles were consuming themselves to sustain the workout. It has taken a full day for me to feel good again.
Never again will I eat improperly on these days of extended distances. I know better too which makes it even worse.
