Monday I decided to test where I was at with my running. To be fair, I only wanted to test my running in connection with a ride around Bonelli so I simulated race pace. I did the strenuous 3 loop, 21.6 mile ride in 1:03.13 and then ran slightly over 5k (3.3 mi.) in 0:28.53 which is an average of 8:45 min/mile.
The ride and run portions never hit my red zone at all which means I was good for a harder overall pace. The higher achievable HR zone might have been better reserved for the run than the bike. For the ride I spent 46% in zone 4 and 48% in zone 3. For the run I spent 80% of my time in zone 4.
I will say that while I am happy with my race pace performance, it wasn't without the suffering afterwards. Running brings new pains and soreness in areas I'm not accustomed to yet. Notably my hip flexors. Monday night I was exhausted and went to bed early. Tuesday morning I woke up and was sore, stiff, and otherwise fatigued as expected but by the end of the day I was good to go and felt fully recovered.
I did run 2.2 miles earlier in the morning at the gym also so I wasn't totally rested but not exhausted either.
For clarification, my HR zones are listed below. They were a result of the VO2Max testing I had done over the summer.
Zone 1: Very light intensity 96 - 114 bpm
Zone 2: Light intensity 115 - 133 bpm
Zone 3: Moderate intensity 134 - 152 bpm
Zone 4: Hard intensity 153 - 171 bpm
Zone 5: Maximum intensity 172 - 191 bpm
Overall I think my ride/run combination is coming along well. I'm maintaining my strength on the bike and decreasing my min/mile run times the more times I get out an run. I have found that striking a balance between the two can be difficult at times.
