First Tri - Relay style

Today was my first experience being a competitor much less a spectator at a triathlon. I've seen them on TV from time to time over the years but it really wasn't until today that I gained a true appreciation for not only the sport but the athletes who participate.

I rode the bike portion of today's triathlon out at Bonelli Park. The total distances were a 500 m swim, 24k bike, and 5k run. Don did the swimming and running portions. I finished the ride in 43 minutes flat according to my power meter. Bonelli certainly isn't a mountain stage race but it's no flat course by any means either. My finishing time is about what I expected to do. It was an average speed of about 20.5 mph.

It truly was a cool experience. Perhaps in September when the LA Tri Series hosts a single event out at Bonelli in September (one that's not a series of events like today's and the next two are) I may try my hand at the express distance. I absolutely suck at swimming and can manage running so we'll see. The next two relays with Don may hook me a bit more.

Today is my 30th birthday so it was quite something to participate in my first tri today. Of course Brynne started getting sick at 1 am and has been giving my lovely gifts all day long. It's late now, and she has yet to eat today and has sipped at water. She's not fond of the Pedialyte and detests the PeptoBismal but she at least gets some of the pepto down. She ingested something Saturday that came up at 1 am. Her vomiting fortunately has subsided over the past few hours so I'm hoping tomorrow she will start eating. Of course, the near 100 degree heat we've had today and the low 90's tomorrow will not help. Poor baby.

Rachel (my girlfriend) took a cell phone video of my passing today during the race. I'll post it here, while insignificant and nothing much to some, it's a novelty to have even a 9 second clip of me on the bike. I've only found it to play with Quicktime. One is very grainy and the other a bit clearer. They were each taken on different laps. I'm in the light blue bibs.

Wahoo! That's awesome, and I'm glad to hear you liked the "tri" environment. I'm telling you...it's a great community and very welcoming to new participants. HAPPY BIRTHDAY too! What a great way to enter your 30's! Long comment here, but I also hope your pup is better...poor gal!
