Well I'm back. It was cold to say the least (43 degrees after the first run) and the organization was mediocre. One of the guys directing traffic in and out of transition didn't even know there was a Du so when I asked if the course was just the same as it was for the first run he looked at me and just about asked what a Duathlon was.
The bike course was changed mid race for some reason. The second loop I was on the course was shortened. The amount of people that can't ride a bike much less stay to the right was completely amazing. Factor that in with saturated and at times flooded roads and the few fast people that actually were out there it made a perfect disaster completely possible between cyclists. I committed in the back of my mind that if something happened as I was racing downhill then so be it. It's not the ideal scenario but I wasn't going to be overly cautious with the recreational cyclists. There was even talk in transition before the race started amongst people who admitted they barely knew how to ride a bike. SAY WHAT???
I finished in 1:20:xx. My time on course wasn't bad. The bike was a PITA and I suffered as a result of the novice riders. My run times were pretty good and better than I expected. Particularly the second 5k since I was working pretty good on the bike.
Run1: avg. pace 7:28/mile
Bike: 26:40 for 8.3 miles
Run2: avg. pace 7:46/mile
My first run leg was 74% in the red zone. After about a mile I settled in to something comfortable and was surprised I was running the pace I was and it felt good. My second run leg was only 25% in the red and 58% in zone 4. I probably could have gone harder on the 2nd run leg but wasn't sure what to expect out of my body. Plus it was damn cold. On the bike, I couldn't tell if it was raining or hailing.

nice work on the DU! I was laughing as I read this 'cause I completely understand that scene! Lots of folks do these races to test their limits, etc...and good for them that they're getting out there, but it does tend to freak out those of us who know rules of the road.
I just wanted you to know that it's snowing here right now, so does that make you feel better? Maybe our warm weather is heading your way after all. Hey - are you on facebook?
hi scott! happy thursday to you!
naaah, don't worry about facebook if you're not on it much. I was just thinking if you were, I could send you messages through that. Not a big deal at all!
I'm heading to Houston tomorrow, unfortunately I won't have my bike along. :-(
Hope you have a great weekend!
