Alex and I left the Anaheim train station about 7 am Sunday. We rode down the coast, through the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base and down to our destination...Solana Beach. It was a pretty good ride. Riding through Encinitas got to be very hairy and nerve racking since there was a Market/Street Fair going on. The already narrow PCH road through town was cluttered with crazy stop and go traffic, people blindly backing into parallel parking spots while still in traffic, and oblivious people walking out from between cars. That's not to mention the occassional car that wanted to leave it's parallel parking spot and road surface to keep an eye out for. Thankfully it was only a few mile stretch. My stress level guiding Alex and I through there immediately dropped once we hit open coastal road again.
Camp Pendleton got a bit toasty since going through the base means going inland. I think we hit a high of 98 degrees (so says my power meter). I know it at least certainly felt roasty.
Once down in Solana we stopped off at the obligatory Pizza Port for a few slices of delicious pizza. We sat watching the Little League World Series and I was shocked when I saw a team from Chula Vista, CA I guess representing the state against China. They have a kid on their squad that's 13 years old, is 6 FEET TALL and weighs 213 lbs!!!! All I could think of in my disbelief was poor mother at child birth! This kid looked like a man child.
I was a bit bummed that Pizza Port went to cranberry cocktail juice and no longer serves the ice cold apple juice. I really looked forward to the apple juice after a long ride.
We did 80 miles in 4:37 which isn't bad considering all the lights we hit going down.
